Celebrating National Mentoring Month

Mentoring Month Comes to a Close

January celebrations National Mentoring Month, and Choices is thankful for the multiple people and agencies who provide the important service to youth in our care. Mentors are critical year round, so instead of putting National Mentoring Month to a close, let’s keep the ball rolling into the rest of the year! In the spirit of mentoring, we asked staff members to offer their thoughts for The WrapUp - our e-newsletter that you can sign up to receive right here.

Being Mentored, Becoming a Mentor
Cory Scott - DC Choices

Mentoring is defined as the practice of assigning a junior member of staff to the care of a more experienced person who assists him in his career. A mentor is defined as a wise and trusted counselor, teacher, influential senior sponsor or supporter. What does this mean? What does this have to do with anything? EVERYTHING!

Mentors are key components of the development of our youth to become better than what they already are. Anyone who says they have not been mentored nor needed a mentor has presented a universal injustice. Mentors are everywhere doing everything. Many adults need mentors and we are assured that our youth need mentors as well.

Many times, mentors fill the gap of what may be missing from home or provide a supplement to social and cultural enrichment beyond what is already taught and put into place. We all play a part of mentor when we redirect a child’s behavior, give positive feedback to them for a job well done and guide them through life directly or indirectly. Our attire, our speech, our tone and our approach are being taught to our youth on a daily basis whether we think it or not.

The lessons learned of hard work, dedication, humility, self-worth, acceptance and overall growth can be gained through the endless mentoring process in our day to day life. Church members, favorite teacher, best friend’s father, football coach, step instructor or even an older sibling make a huge difference in judgment, decision making and massive outcomes in the life of our youth.

The value and importance of those special individuals who take on the task as a guide for a child’s life, and many times, the lone bright spot in their existence, is critical to their success. Everyone has looked up to someone. Whether it was their mother, father, athlete, businessman or performer, the concept of EACH ONE TEACH ONE is alive and well at Choices as we not only coordinate mentorships, but we ourselves are mentors every day.

As I grew up, I was mentored by many people, but one that stands out was my junior college basketball coach, Coach D. He helped teach me to be resilient and how to persevere. He helped teach me at 18 years old that nothing worth having in life comes easy and that hard work always pays off. I didn’t quite understand it until I graduated from Bowie State University after earning a full basketball scholarship and earned a BA in Communications with a 3.3 GPA. Throughout my 5 year college experience, Coach D called often, advised strongly and cared highly. At the graduation; he pulled me aside, shook my hand and stated “Congratulations! You started on the end of the bench, but you ended as a starter” To this day, Coach D, alongside my father, played a big part in my mindset and outlook not only as a father and a husband, but as a man.

A quote from my father says it all “To become a good man, you must hang around good men”. I can testify that not only does that statement hold true to me, but is certain in my lifestyle today.

The youth we serve hear everything and see everything and hold tight the words “You never know who is watching you”. My son recently turned 2 years old and I have noticed him mimic me often. When I yell while watching football, he screams too. When I shave, I see him in the mirror watching me. Just yesterday while watching wrestling, I put my arms up at the celebration of a match and so did he. Though he is my child, I am essentially a lifelong formal mentor of strength, respect, and the image of manhood.

Our youth are the ones who will take care of us in our old age, so it would behoove us to do right by them, so they do right by us. The mentorship which started indirectly as player to coach in 2002 was the first decade to a lifelong friendship. Mentors are without a doubt a key component and primary source of support and a backbone to success. Lessons learned of drive, perseverance, unity, love, patience and much more are taught daily.

Next time you see your parent, uncle, pastor, professor, coach, frat brother or anyone that has been a mentor in your life, tell them thank you, and tomorrow as you see your client, tell them YOU’RE WELCOME!

The Value of Mentoring for Youth
Cheryl Mitchell-Jones - Maryland Choices

Many youth today have a need for a positive role model in their life. In today’s society, the family structure continues to change. We are seeing an increase in divorce rates, an increase in the number of single parent homes, and more households where both the mother and father need to work full time. But even if a parent is available, some youth need additional supportive adults in their life, to fill some void. Many youth are left without proper supervision, or may feel that they don’t have someone in their life they can confide in or go to for help.

That’s where mentoring can come in and play a vital role in a young person’s development. Mentoring is simply an opportunity for a relationship to be established between a youth and an adult. Often times you will find that the mentor is able to offer the youth the benefit of their life experiences. Mentoring can happen in many different settings and in many different ways. If you look around your own community, you will find mentoring programs in neighborhoods, schools, churches, community centers, and agencies. Some mentoring relationships focus on specific needs that a youth may have, from preparing to get a job, to improving self-esteem, to increasing social skills. Other relationships will just be supportive of the youth, providing them with someone the youth can spend time with, learn to trust and share their daily struggles and worries with. Some youth will find a mentor within their family or through a natural support. Others are lucky to be matched with someone through an organization or agency.

With so many new challenges facing our younger generation, mentoring is needed now more than ever. Our organization, Choices, Inc., believes in the value of mentoring. And we have seen the positive outcomes that come from mentoring relationships. Over the years we have had testimony from youth, families and other adults who have shared the positive impact that having a mentor has had on their lives or the lives of someone they know. Examples include improved school attendance and grades, better relationships among family members or peers, or decreases in the use of alcohol or drugs. In some respects the impact and value of mentoring cannot be fully measured, because the mentoring relationship may continue to positively impact that youth for the rest of their life. Our youth deserve the best we have to offer. And sometimes, what we have to offer is simply our time. And that may be all they need.

Indiana First Region V State to Receive Federal Approval for Child Welfare Improvement Plan

Implementation Strategy Becomes Model for Other States

INDIANAPOLIS—The Indiana Department of Child Services (DCS) announced today it has received word from Region V of the Administration of Child and Families, an affiliate of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, that it has satisfactorily finalized its Program Improvement Plan (PIP). The PIP was required as a result of a 2007 federal review of state child welfare cases. All 50 states are required to complete the three-fold review, comprised of statewide assessments, on-site analysis of a random number of various cases and a review of child welfare practice data. The review indicated the state was not meeting several key compliance steps, including adoption, training and the availability of services necessary to reunify children and families.

DCS developed a proposal which included 11data goals and 133 compliance steps necessary to meet and exceed the federal assessment benchmarks. In 2009 DCS began implementing its PIP into practice. On October 18, 2011, DCS was informed by the Chicago Region V office of the Administration of Children and Families that the program improvement plan had been successfully completed.

“This is an important milestone for Indiana’s children and families,” stated James W. Payne, DCS Director. “The completion of the PIP highlights the continued evolution of the state’s child welfare system but also demonstrates the commitment of the men and women working each day to ensure the safety of Indiana’s abused and neglected children while at the same time changing our culture from a placement system to a permanency system.”

Indiana is the first of seven states within Region V to complete its PIP requirements and its successful implementation is being recognized by other states as a guidepost for child welfare practice reform. Region V states include Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin. For more information about Region V: http://www.acf.hhs.gov/programs/region5/about/index.html#service.

About Indiana Department of Child Services (DCS):

DCS is committed to protecting children who are victims of abuse or neglect. The Agency’s primary goal is to safely keep these children at home with their families by offering appropriate support services. If safety continues to be a concern, relative or foster care placements are necessary. DCS also oversees adoptions from the foster care system and manages the Child Support Bureau. The Kids First Trust Fund, supported by the sale of ‘Kids First’ specialty automobile license plates, subsidizes child abuse and neglect prevention programs. In collaboration with the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts, DCS’ Books for Youth initiative is targeting a Super Goal for the Super Game: collect 750,000 books for foster kids by Feb. 2012.
November is National Adoption Awareness Month

300 Hoosier Foster Children Waiting for Forever Homes

INDIANAPOLIS—The Indiana Dept. of Child Services (DCS) has much to celebrate. November is National Adoption Awareness Month, a time to remember forever families created through adoption. DCS kicked off the month-long recognition today with a news conference in the State Capitol Rotunda keynoted by Adoption Manager Sandra Caesar. The event included recently-adopted children, foster children, adoptive parents, foster parents, DCS adoption staff and several portraits of waiting children from the Indiana Heart Gallery.

Though National Adoption Awareness Month is a nationwide campaign to encourage families throughout the United States to open their hearts and homes to children waiting to be adopted, the particular focus is the adoption of children currently in foster care. There are approximately 107,000 children and youth nationwide waiting for permanent families in the foster care system. In Indiana, approximately 1,400 foster kids have had their parental rights terminated and about 300 of those are available for immediate adoption.

“When the biological parents cannot be part of a child’s life, then an adoptive mother or father becomes a child’s most important influence. Children with a caring and involved adoptive parent are better able to realize their full potential,” noted DCS Director James Payne. “Adoptive parents can help their children thrive by encouraging them to aim high, work hard and make good choices that will lead to healthy and satisfying lives.”

It’s especially appropriate that National Adoption Awareness Month is positioned in the month of November when Americans celebrate a time of thanksgiving. Through the marvel of adoption, thousands have celebrated the unique joys of creating families with children from foster care. Since 2005, DCS has finalized an average of 1,363 adoptions per year and last year celebrated the completion of 1,542. Those numbers have been helped, in part, by the dramatic changes in adoption over the past 30 years. Today, to be eligible to adopt a child from the foster care system, you do not have rich, own your own house or even be married. You only need space in your heart to provide love for a child.

While many prospective adoptive parents would prefer adopting an infant, many of Indiana’s waiting children are older kids or are in sibling groups. Siblings need to find homes that will keep them together so they will not be separated and suffer additional loss. Older kids—some in their teens—offer several distinct adoption advantages. Adopting an older child may allow the adoptive parent to:

Learn more about the child's built-in abilities and curiosities.

Match personal interests and personality with the child-to-be.

Glimpse into the child's past to help develop an understanding of their memories and key people in their lives.

Interact immediately by playing games or participating in family outings.

DCS continues to focus on bringing attention to these kids-in-need, providing pertinent information to prospective adoptive parents and resources to current adoptive mothers or fathers.

To help build awareness, DCS developed a compelling exhibit of photographic portraits of children in need of adoptive families. Called the Indiana Heart Gallery, the traveling exhibit began making stops at various public venues in 2007. Using the talents of professional photographers who volunteer their time, the individual spirit and true personality of each child is captured. The Gallery can feature more than 40 portraits, depending on the size of the exhibit area. (The Gallery was featured today at the kick-off event.)

An online Picture Book with photos and short bios of adoptable kids is also available (see http://www.in.gov/dcs/2737.htm). To help answer questions about foster child adoptions, there are several adoption specialists strategically located throughout the state. (They’re called SNAP Specialists; see http://www.in.gov/dcs/2735.htm .) And to provide support for parents that adopt a foster child, DCS offers a full array of post-adoptive services, including information, referral, therapy, crisis intervention, support groups and mentoring.

These are very real children who desperately need families of their own. Though waiting kids come from a variety of backgrounds—some have physical or mental disabilities, some are part of a sibling group and many are older children or adolescents—DCS continues to work to prove that there is no such thing as an unadoptable child.

Top 10 Reasons to Consider Adopting a Foster Child:

#10 – Others tell you that you are good with kids.

#9 – Your commitment will help change a child’s future.

#8 – Patience and a sense of humor are two of your greatest strengths.

#7 – You have a heart that is bigger than your home.

#6 – Reaching out to others seems natural to you.

#5 – You have a spare bedroom and would rather it go to a child than become yet another storage closet.

#4 – You know how important it is to be part of a family.

#3 – You are ready to accept the challenge of parenting a special child.

#2 – You believe every kid counts.

And the #1 reason to consider adopting a foster child: Today there are more than 300 foster children in Indiana waiting for forever homes.

Metta World Peace (formerly Ron Artest) and his nonprofit 501c3 Xcel University, Inc. recently announced a donation of $10,000 to Choices, Inc.’s family support program, Families Reaching for Rainbows, in Indianapolis. Rainbows is one of eight programs receiving funds made possible from proceeds of “Win My Bling”, where the former Pacer star raffled his LA Lakers Championship Ring. The one-time donation will establish an emergency fund for families served through Rainbows – families who are not only raising youth with severe mental or emotional challenges but oftentimes may be facing severe financial challenges such as being able to purchase food or clothing, or pay utilities.

Baltimore Sun: Baltimore Co. launches advocate program to stem rise in foster kids

In Dundalk, the need for foster homes far outstrips the abilities of neighborhood families who can open their doors to children in crisis.

Baltimore County's Department of Social Services has launched an effort to recruit foster parents in its eastern neighborhoods and has coupled it with a program to train community volunteers to assist families long before they have to relinquish their children.

"Across the state and the country, there are initiatives to engage the community in protecting its children," said Judith Schagrin, DSS assistant director for children's services. [Read the Complete Story]

The concept of "Systems of Care" has grown and evolved a great deal throughout the years. Over at Needs Aren't Services, we take a look at a recent article from the National Technical Assistance Center for Children's Mental Health on how systems of care are becoming a way to reach new populations.

Choices to Expand to Northern Indiana

Choices to Expand to Northern Indiana

Choices has been invited by the Indiana Department of Child Services to administer an intensive short-term intervention, aiming to move 300 youth out of restrictive residential environments and stabilize them in family and community-based settings. Youth and families will be served through a six month long process which connects them with opportunities to develop and access community-based supports and develop skills that will help prevent future involvement in the child welfare system. Choices will begin serving the first 150 of 300 youth in early September, 2010.

Systems of Care Conference Announced - Sponsorships Available

Systems of Care Conference Announced - Sponsorships Available

Choices and the Technical Assistance Center are pleased to announce the 9th Annual Indiana Systems of Care Conference. On October 1st, we will return to the Adam's Mark Hotel on Indianapolis' southwest side. Last year's conference set a new attendance record, with more than 400 attendees and unique sponsors taking part. The SOC conference is unlike any in the state and is one of the most established and successful children's mental health conferences available.

This year's conference will feature guest keynote speaker Brett Eastburn. Brett was born with no arms and no legs, but more importantly, he truly believes that he was also born with no handicaps! Brett believes you're a success only if you choose to be. He also believes you are handicapped only if you allow yourself to be. Brett considers his body a very special gift to be used to inspire others to be the best they can be!

If you are interested in attending, please stay tuned to our events page as more details become available. Organizations interested in sponsoring this event can find more details in the our official sponsorship kit.

More than 5,000 people are released annually from state prisons to Marion County. They are typically faced with insurmountable needs and oftentimes when these needs go unmet, they return to a life of crime.

Thanks to a $60,000 grant from the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust, offenders released to Marion County will have access to a program to help them succeed in the community.

New Needs Aren't Services Blog Entry Posted

How would you react if someone told you what YOU needed?

At the Georgetown Training Institutes, Choices, Inc. launched the Needs Arent Services blog to give systems of care communities across the country a place to share their thoughts about the phrase that pays Listen, Listen and then Listen. More than 150 people commented on our first post, a testament to the importance of providing families and professionals alike a place to have a meaningful discourse.

This month we are inviting you to join in a discussion about the phrase that pays Needs Arent Services. This phrase has historically created controversy around what services are needed in a continuum of care.

Re-entry Inmates Honored in Graduation Ceremony

Hendricks County Flyer

Curtis Key, a resident in the Plainfield Re-Entry Educational Facility, recently shared his feelings with those attending his graduation ceremony from the Christian Theological Seminary (CTS).

“A lot of guys in this program are associated with failure,” he said. “After being in this program, I am excited because I now know I can accomplish my goal in life.”

Key, along with nine other residents and eight outside students from CTS, participated in a six-week course to learn how religion and the teachings of the Bible have directly affected and influenced the penal system around the world from the beginning to present. The graduation ceremony is the result of the first ever collaboration between the CTS and the Indiana Department of Correction.

This summer Choices employees will present seven seminars and multiple poster sessions at the 2008 Georgetown University Training Institutes. More than 2200 people from all over the country and across all child serving systems attend this event to learn more about best practices in systems of care and children’s mental health.

The Institutes are very competitive – several hundred proposals were received to fill about 135 seminar slots.

If you're attending the Institutes, make sure to visit our Needs Aren't Services blog booth for a chance to win an Apple iPod!

The Institutes will be held July 16 to 20, 2008 in Nashville, Tennessee. The biennial Training Institutes are organized by the National Technical Assistance Center for Children's Mental Health at the Georgetown University Center for Child and Human Development in partnership with the Child, Adolescent and Family Branch of the federal Center for Mental Health Services.
